‘I never know what the colors are going to be. . . I’m trying to open up a space for people to wander.’ Stanley Whitney
The almost-square soft-cover volume we designed to showcase the paintings improvised by Stanley Whitney in the afternoon takes the reader on a palpable journey through colour.
Our design plays with units and grids of different scales just like Whitney’s abstract compositions. Vertical pre-creased marks further segment the book’s individual pages. Throw-outs and posters unfold at irregular intervals. These allow the reader to encounter the coloured paintings at different sizes, sometimes in the top quarter of a page surrounded by white space, sometimes four times larger in a poster and elsewhere as full-bleed details magnifying the daubs of paint.
We paid special attention to achieving high-quality reproductions on responsibly sourced uncoated paper. The book does justice to colourful paintings and is still sustainable.
