Johan Dehlin, ‘Five Buildings by Frank Gehry’

‘Dehlin’s photographic eye stands in stark contrast to the architecture: he is calm and still where Gehry is restless.’ – Tom Emerson

Design for a book of photographs taken in 2015 by Swedish photographer Johan Dehlin, documenting architect Frank Gehry’s early work. Better known for grand public buildings formed from swirling, acrobatic planes, the book repositions Gehry within the Los Angeles culture of the 1970s and 1980s, with its appetite for suburban construction and the everyday.

In keeping with this spirit, we designed a matter-of-fact white paperback, bound with orange-brown stitching. A rigorous yet playful layout balances exuberance with control, echoing the tumble of plywood, timber frames, light and shadow in Dehlin’s images.
