Kellenberger–White were commissioned to produce a catalogue for Ellen Gallagher’s solo exhibition ‘Accidental Records’, which explored the complex histories of the Black Atlantic and the afterlives of the Middle Passage. The slowly layered surfaces of her work become a kind of reckoning, with the artist returning to her canvas in a manner similar to sailors repeatedly marking their changing location at sea. For the design of the catalogue – which includes new paintings and drawings by Gallagher – we worked in close collaboration with the artist, developing a book format that could allow for a series of layered interventions. Alongside views of Gallagher’s artworks, portraits of the artist working in her studio and texts by curator Adrienne Edward and author Philip Hoare sits a series of tipped-in postcard-size pieces of supplementary material were positioned by the artist. For the cover, we recreated a section of Gallagher’s studio backcloth, using a number of screen-printed and offset-litho processes.
