Shuvinai Ashoona, ‘When I Draw’
A large-format limited-edition catalogue for an exhibition by Inuit artist Shuvinai Ashoona at London’s Perimeter gallery. Ashoona’s sprawling coloured pencil and ink drawings, which she draws lying down on the floor, combine mythical and everyday imagery into a single reality. In the book, double-page details at full scale go some way to communicating the physicality involved in the drawings’ creation as well as their map-like qualities. By making the catalogue from a variety of printer’s excess paper stock, and by including sticker pages and a folded dust jacket over a cover of reinforced card, we created a catalogue akin to a poster-book.
